Ph.D. Degree Program
Graduate School Requirements
- A minimum of 90 graduate quarter hours beyond the M.A. and a total of 135 graduate quarter hours beyond the B.A. A minimum of 45 graduate credit hours above the M.A. must be completed at Ohio State.
- Three out of four consecutive quarters with an enrollment of at least 10 graduate credit hours per quarter must be completed while in residence at Ohio State.
- After admission to candidacy, a minimum of 20 graduate credit hours over a period of at least two quarters must be completed.
- Registration is required for at least 3 credit hours during the quarter any portion of the General Examination is taken or graduation is expected.
Department Requirements
Beyond the M.A. or its hour equivalent, the remaining 90 quarter hour commitment is divided in the following manner:
- 50 to 70 hours in the History of Art (excluding 999). The hour variation arises from the needs of the individual's program.
- Up to 20 hours of cognate courses are allowed on the approval of the student's advisor.
A minimum of two languages related to the field of concentration is mandatory.
The General Examination consists of four parts: written examinations on the major field, two minor fields and an oral examination. Passing the General Examination admits the student to candidacy for the Doctoral Degree.
Following the successful completion of the General Examination, the candidate must submit a written prospectus of his/her dissertation within two quarters, but not beyond five quarters. After the prospectus is approved, a colloquium will be scheduled.
The candidate must complete the dissertation within five years.
