Professor Richardson is a specialist in the field of Renaissance Art in Europe with a secondary interest in the post-Renaissance Art of the West (1600–1960). His own field of expertise is in Venetian Art of the Renaissance. Over the years he has contributed to numerous professional organizations and held several academic distinctions including being a Fulbright scholar in Italy (Padua, 1959–1960) and an I Tatti Fellow (1984–1985).
