Professor Vinegar's areas of interest include the history of architecture from 1750 to the present; theory and historiography; photography; and the interrelationship between the arts in the modern era. His first book, entitled I AM A MONUMENT: On Learning from Las Vegas (MIT, 2008), is a reinterpretation of Learning from Las Vegas, by Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour, from the perspective of philosophical skepticism. Vinegar's second book manuscript, entitled Perspicuous Views and the Foundations of Possible Buildings, is on the influential 19th-century architect, theoretician, and restorer Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. His current research explores the fundamental relationship between bodily habit and architectural habitation in the modern era.
