Misunderstandings, trompe-l’oeil and reverie all might be considered products of a play with aesthetic frontiers, one as tempting as it is dangerous. The hero’s quest is both programmatic and exemplary: he wants to prove, no matter the cost, that the world conforms to the text that has served as his guide through life, and that it is fundamentally identical to the mountain of tales of chivalry piled up in his dusty library. Travelling through the world as if it were an infinite text to be read, interpreted, and decoded, the knight of the rueful countenance transforms every form of reality into representation. This talk will analyse the “Don Quixote Effect” in the context of Spanish painting of the Golden Age and specifically the problem of the “aesthetic border” in the work of Murillo. Bio: Born in Romania in 1949, Victor Stoichita studied art history in Rome, Paris, and Munich. Since 1991 he has been professor of the History of Art at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. His numerous publications include: The Self-Aware Image: An Insight into Early Modern Meta-paint-ing (first published in French in 1993 as L’Instauration du tableau); Visionary Experience in the Golden Age of Spanish Art (1995); A Short History of the Shadow (1997); Goya: The Last Carnival (1999); The Pygmalion Effect: From Ovid to Hitchcock (2008); and, most recently, a memoir, Oublier Bucarest (2014). In 2012 he became a member of the Italian National Academy, and in 2014 was inducted into the European Academy. Last year Professor Stoichita was awarded the title of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic. "The Don Quixote Effect: Pictorial Fiction and Aesthetic Borders in Murillo and Beyond"

Lecture Description:

Don Quixote’s trajectory along the ridge that separates reality from imagination is characteristic of the seventeenth century.
