BEYOND REPRESENTATION: THEORY AND PRACTICE IN LATER CHINESE PAINTING
Professor Julia Andrews
This class will explore Chinese painting of the late imperial and early modern period (14th-19th centuries) with focus on major artists and schools of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Issues to be considered in lecture and reading include shifting meanings of symbolic forms, the painter’s practice, literati-amateur painting and its literary foundations, innovation through revival of ancient styles, collectors and patrons, and China’s encounters with art of the West.
