MEDIEVAL ART IN ITALY: ROME & FLORENCE

"Medieval Art in Italy” will be taught with a week in Columbus and over two weeks engaging directly with works of art in Rome and Florence, Italy. The focus of the course will be on the art and architecture of these cities from the Late Roman Empire through the Early Renaissance (approximately 300-1400 CE). We’ll explore churches, town halls, catacombs, mosaics, paintings, sculptures, icons, and other media in order to understand the cultural landscape of the medieval Italian city. Every day we’ll visit a new cultural site and explore it together through the professor’s presentations, extensive discussion, and independent activities. Students will have a great deal of free time on their own, as well, to explore these amazing European cultural centers. In addition to Rome and Florence, we will also take day trips to Pisa and Siena.
