Area of Study: Modern Chinese Art
Tianchu (Jane) Gao is a first-year MA student studying modern Chinese art. She is interested in the history of art and visual culture in China from twentieth century to the present, cross-cultural encounters between East Asia and the West, and art under Mao. Tianchu received her BA in Art from the College of William and Mary. Her undergraduate Honors’ Thesis explores No Name (wuming 無名), a underground art group during the Cultural Revolution which secretly practiced art countering the authoritarian Socialist Realism because of its non-realist visual language and art-for-art’s-sake philosophy.
