Area of Study: early modern Chinese art
Gillian Yanzhuang Zhang focuses on early modern (ca. 1500-1850) Chinese painting and material culture. She takes a special interest in the interrelationship between image-making, art media, and the definition of art. She is also interested in print culture and antiquarianism. Before joining the department, she received her BA in history and MA in material culture studies from Sun Yat-sen University.
Gillian is currently a pre-doctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer|Sackler Galleries of Art in Washington, DC.
