Wölfflin, The Rose, and Jay DeFeo's Art Historical Process
Elizabeth Ferrell, Assistant Professor, Miami University
This talk investigates the process that Jay DeFeo (1929-89) used to create The Rose, a monumental painting that she worked on continuously from 1958 to 1965. Specifically, it examines the connections DeFeo drew between her cyclical, cumulative painting practice and Heinrich Wölfflin’s history of style.
