This study abroad program investigates the art of Japan, with a specific emphasis on art and architecture from the 14th century to the present in Tokyo and Kyoto. Students will spend a week in May on campus doing preparatory coursework, reading and research, and will then travel with the instructor to Japan for two weeks of intensive study, including seeing artworks, temples, and shrines firsthand. After initial research in Columbus, students will each present and introduce to the group a work of art or architecture in Tokyo or Kyoto.
We will discuss historical and social contexts, Buddhist versus secular viewing settings, and the relations of power involved in the collection of “Japanese art.” The class will follow a rough chronological order while allowing the linkages between past and present to be examined, rather than obscured. No past experience in Japanese studies or art history required.
Education Abroad Program:
Students will begin the program in Tokyo, Japan before departing to Kyoto by high speed train. While in Kyoto students will have the opportunity to stay inside an active Buddhist temple and receive instruction on Zen meditation, calligraphy and Japanese tea ceremony from the monastery’s abbots. The group then returns to Tokyo before final departure.
Students are responsible for paying a program fee of $TBD and Ohio State tuition. Fee includes accommodations, local transportation, entry fees, and international health insurance. It does not cover passport, visa (if necessary), international airfare, non-program meals, or personal expenses.
This program has been generously subsidized by the College of Arts and Sciences.
