Our Faculty

Faculty in the Department of History of Art seek to contribute to the ongoing intellectual work within the discipline. We do so by developing expertise in particular subfields and engaging productively in the broad, ever-shifting philosophical, scholarly, and institutional debates that determine the content and structure of art history. Our faculty is diverse in terms of geographic and temporal coverage, yet we share certain interests: historiography and critical theory; cross-cultural exchange and the negotiation of artistic, cultural, and political boundaries; art’s role in mediating social action; and issues of representation and the affective engagement of the image.

Our faculty are focused on creating a culture and practice of intersectionality in all aspects of teaching and research both by exploring the relationship between the visual arts and issues such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and religion, and by creating a culture of inclusion within the classroom and the department as a whole.
