Professor Barbara Haeger of the Department of History of Art will deliver the fourth talk in the 2015-2016 Religions of the World: Past and Present Community Lecture series. Her talk is titled, "In the Wake of Iconoclasm: Justifying the use of the images in Christian Worship." Questions pertaining to the making and use of images in worship are so central to how Christians understand their faith that they have periodically provoked vehement debates and violent outbursts. Such outbursts led to a widespread destruction of images in the Byzantine Empire in the 8th Century and in Europe in the 16th Century. The responses, both textual and pictorial, form the basis for this exploration of various types of works produced primarily in Europe.
This lecture is free and open to all. There will be a brief question-and-answer session and a reception following the lecture.
