Distinguished University Professor Emerita Julia Andrews Publishes Co-edited Volume and Exhibition Catalogue Essay

From Shanghai to Ohio cover
Distinguished University Professor Emerita Julia Andrews recently published a co-edited volume of essays (with Shuyu Kong and Shengtian Zheng) for Routledge. Entitled "Art and Modernism in Socialist China: Unexplored International Encounters 1949–1979," it is the first book examining the art history of China’s socialist period from the perspective of modernism, modernity, and global interactions. Contributors to this collection also include two History of Art graduate alumnae: Yang Wang (PhD 2015) and Effie Yanfei Yin (PhD 2019).

A second recent publication by Professor Andrews is a catalogue essay, “Shanghai to Ohio: The Many Worlds of Woo Chong Yung / C.Y. Woo (1898–1989),” for the exhibition “From Shanghai to Ohio: Woo Chong Yung (1898–1989),” currently on view at the Cincinnati Art Museum until August 18, 2024. Curated by Dr. Hou-mei Sung, this exhibition celebrates the life and work of Woo, a highly accomplished painter, calligrapher, and poet from Shanghai. Woo migrated to Columbus, Ohio in 1966 and subsequently became an active presence in the local community, teaching classes in Chinese painting and martial arts and contributing his talents to local arts councils and ethnic festivals in Columbus and central Ohio.
