History of Art Course Travels to Italy

Professor Whittington and students pose for a group picture on their trip to Italy for the course "Medieval Art in Italy"

In the second half of May 2025, Prof. Karl Whittington and PhD Candidate Emilela Thomas-Adams traveled with 19 undergraduates to Italy for a study abroad course, “HistArt 4798: Medieval Art in Italy.”

The group spent the first week in Rome, visiting the Colosseum, Forum, numerous museums, and almost every Early Christian church in the city, studying the formation of Christian art and architecture between the third and tenth centuries.  In the course’s second week, the students and instructors moved on to Florence, where they visited museums and churches, and took day trips to Pisa and Siena, studying the art and architecture of these late medieval Italian cities.

The undergraduates came from a range of majors, including design, architecture, art, education, and communications.
