In June of 2024, PhD student Tony Del Aversano traveled to Italy to conduct research for his upcoming dissertation focusing on gender and sexuality in Italian medieval art. Supported by the History of Art Department, the Graduate Research Small Grants Program, and the Cathleen M. Murnane Travel Scholarship Fund, Tony traveled to cities in the regions of Tuscany and Lazio to see how artists portrayed non-gendered beings, such as angels, in a variety of medium, including panel paintings and fresco cycles. He was able to see such figures both in situ, in a variety of churches, and in museums, like the Uffizi.
