Professor Andrew Shelton has published a new article in Nineteenth Century Art Worldwide, in a special issue of the journal on 19th Century French Drawings. Prof. Shelton’s contribution, “The First Retrospective Exhibition of the Drawings of J.-A.-D. Ingres (1861)” reconstructs the first major exhibition of the artist’s drawings, which was staged in Paris in 1861. Though this exhibition has never been the subject of sustained scholarly inquiry, Prof. Shelton argues that it served a critical role in how drawings came to be viewed within Ingres’ oeuvre and critical reception. The article is accompanied by an extensive appendix cataloguing the works included in the show.
