In May of 2022 Schuyler Black-Seitz received Cathleen M. Murnane Travel Scholarship funds to visit the home and collections of Jon Quirt outside Santa Barbara, California. Jon, the youngest son of artist Walter Quirt, possesses a large collection of his father’s paintings and works on paper, as well as all of his father’s extant files and writings. The privilege to view Quirt’s work and to review his documents in-person was invaluable for researching an artist who remains conspicuously absent from many conventional histories of American art.
