PhD Student Dareen Hussein Attended the Sijal Institute for Arabic Language in Culture in Jordan

At Sijal, Dareen completed a course on the history and practice of Islamic art and calligraphy.

In July and August 2022, PhD student Dareen Hussein attended the Sijal Institute for Arabic Language and Culture in Amman, Jordan, where she took an immersive Arabic language course, and a class on Islamic art and calligraphy. While at Sijal, Dareen was also able to attend several lectures and cultural activities related to the region, such as presentations on Mahmoud Darwish’s poetry, and music classes for the oud and tabla (Middle Eastern guitar and drums). Dareen’s travel and coursework was generously supported by the Cathleen M. Murnane travel scholarship and funding from the department.
