PhD Student Schuyler Black-Seitz Conducts Research on New Deal Murals in New York City
With the support of a Graduate Research Small Grant, PhD student Schuyler Black-Seitz traveled to New York City to conduct dissertation research on New Deal murals. His focus for this trip was on murals commissioned for hospitals by the Federal Art Project (FAP). He visited Harlem Hospital to see Charles Alston’s Magic in Medicine and Modern Medicine; Elmhurst Hospital in Queens to see William Palmer’s Development of Medicine; Queens Hospital Center to see Palmer’s The Function of a Hospital; and Bellevue Hospital to see David Margolis’s Materials for Relaxation. He also traveled to Cornell Tech’s campus on Roosevelt Island to see Ilya Bolotowsky and Albert Swinden’s abstract murals for the former Chronic Disease Hospital.
