In April 2023, Ph.D. student Sophie Richard presented her paper “‘My Fields Were Planted’: Liminal Topography in Drawings by Nina Otero-Warren” at Rice University’s 2023 Graduate Student Conference. Co-hosted by the History of Art Department & Center for the Study of Women, Gender, & Sexuality, participants revisited Linda Nochlin’s famous question to pursue themes of feminist methodology across material culture. To reflect modern scholarship, the conference updated the question to ask, where are our women artists? In addition to attending a faculty roundtable and presentations, Sophie enjoyed visiting the Museum of Fine Art Houston, the Menil Collection, and the Rothko Chapel. Travel to Houston was generously supported by the department.
