Archaeological Project at Es-Selim R4

Northern Dongola region of Sudan at Es-Selim R4

Dr. Sarah Schellinger is the co-director of a new archaeological project in the Northern Dongola region of Sudan at Es-Selim R4 (ESR4). This unexcavated site, comprised of both a settlement and cemetery, has evidence of occupation for at least 1,000 years. Few regional settlement sites have been excavated in-depth, leaving large gaps in our understanding of how the unique form of dispersed or ambulatory Nubian state control affected provincial communities. ESR4 is situated at the northernmost extent of the Kerma Kingdom and southernmost extent of the Egyptian Kingdom, and therefore has the potential to provide material evidence of the transition from a pre- to post-colonial site and answer questions of how the ancient Nubians adapted to this shift in authority. The preliminary findings from the first field season (winter 2020) will be presented at The W.Y. Adams Colloquium: Sudan Past & Present at the British Museum on May 26, 2020.
