The Department congratulates Rebecca Howard on the successful defense of her dissertation entitled "Movements of the Mind: Beyond the Mimetic Likeness in Early Modern Italy." Dr. Howard's dissertation studies how Italian Renaissance portraits were composed in ways intended to project non-mimetic aspects of their sitters. She shows how portraits connected with their viewers through communicative tactics and by visually evoking period understandings of the processes of memory creation.
