History of Art 3521 Views Raphael Tapestries at Columbus Museum of Art
Students in History of Art 3521, taught by Kristen Adams, visited the Columbus Museum of Art on October 27th, 2022 to explore the special exhibition titled "Raphael - The Power of Renaissance Images: The Dresden Tapestries and Their Impact" that is in Columbus through January 8, 2023.
Students spent time in class this semester learning about Raphael's designs for The Acts of the Apostles tapestries that originally hung in the Sistine Chapel. During this field trip, the students were able to experience firsthand the monumental scale and unique materiality of the tapestry medium by analyzing a later edition of the Sistine tapestries known as the Dresden tapestries. This visit provided students with greater insight about the production and visual impact of woven textiles and helped bring to life one of the most dazzling and prized art forms of the Italian Renaissance.
