Erica Levin's essay, "Nothing Clarifies an Image Like Another Image: New Approaches to Found Footage Filmmaking" appears in the new collected volume,  A Companion to Experimental Cinema (Wiley, 2022). The essay asks, how then can found footage’s rich and variable effects be explored without relying on categories or schemas given in advance? Acknowledging that formally similar films may be born of vastly different conditions, it contextualizes the use of found footage within specific historical moments and sites, but also asks how these films participate in the mediation of history more generally.
