Professor Whittington’s class, HistArt 5422: Medieval Manuscript Illumination Assignment

Manuscript Assignment

Students in Professor Whittington’s class, HistArt 5422: Medieval Manuscript Illumination were assigned to make their own small manuscripts containing the text of several Psalms in Latin or English. They spaced and ruled the pages, wrote the text as scribes (some in fabulous Gothic script!), and came up with unique programs of decoration. The assignment aimed to show them how much work went into the making of books by hand in medieval Europe, and they really rose to the challenge with some wonderfully creative work.
