Monica Harmat (History of Art minor) Completes a Summer Internship in Art Conservation

As part of the department’s internship course, HA4191, undergraduate Chemistry and History of Art student Monica Harmat has finished a summer internship with ICA Art Conservation. Based in Cleveland, ICA Art was founded in 1952 as the country’s first non-profit art conservation center. Offering conservation services for museums, institutions, as well as individual collectors, ICA Art works to maintain and restore works of art and other objects of cultural heritage.
Coordinated through the History of Art Department, Monica’s internship has helped prepare her for applying to graduate programs in conservation following her undergraduate studies. During her internship, Monica was able to assist in the restoration of a wooden polychrome sculpture, the restoration private collection objects damaged in a house fire, and the construction of archival storage containers designed to preserve works in their best condition. Learning from the conservators at the ICA, Monica was introduced to the techniques and materials used in the vital and constantly evolving field of professional art conservation.
