Ph.D. candidate Christy Sher presents a paper, “Visualizing the Maternal Body: Pregnancy, Pedagogy, and Civic Instruction in Utagawa Yoshitora’s Fubo no on o shiru zu (Realize One’s Parental Love, 1880),” at the 74th Annual Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs in Columbus, Ohio. Drawing on her dissertation research on sexuality and medicine in Edo-period print culture, Christy is part of the pre-organized panel “Visualizing Life and Death in East Asia,” alongside scholars of Chinese medicine history, Chinese social and cultural history of war, and Korean art history.
