PhD Candidate Emilela Thomas-Adams Conducts Dissertation Research in Switzerland and Germany
This summer, PhD Candidate Emilela Thomas-Adams traveled to Switzerland and Germany to conduct research on several of her dissertation case study objects. While in Bern, Emilela met with curators at the Bern Historical Museum to discuss and access recently rediscovered parchment fragments that once backed embroidered holy figures on an altar frontal in the museum’s collection. She also met with conservators at the Regensburg Cathedral Treasury Museum to photograph a rare textile reliquary composed of recycled luxury fabrics. A highlight of Emilela’s trip was seeing one of her favorite medieval artworks; a tapestry featuring a “portrait” of nuns weaving on its borders! Emilela’s travel was generously supported by the Graduate Research Small Grants, the Cathleen M. Murnane Travel Scholarship Fund, and the Aida Cannarsa Snow Endowment Award.
